Hello and thank you for checking out my auction for the 1/60 scale MS-06R-2 Johnny Ridden’s High Mobility Zaku II model kit from Mobile Suit Variation, released by Bandai of Japan during the first half of the 1980s.


Even though Mobile Suit Gundam was not exactly a hit during its initial broadcast in Japan, the success of plastic models from the show made it a hit during re-runs. To meet market demand, the Mobile Suit Variation collection of model kits were released by Bandai. Besides populating the expanded universe of the One Year War, they also serve as a bridge while production continued on the follow-up anime series Zeta Gundam, as some of the designs from MSV would eventually appear in Zeta Gundam (giving Bandai an excuse to reissue the same kits in different boxes).


Compared to the model kits from the original show, the MSV kits feature a more realistic take on the mechas, and the variants always serve a specific military purpose instead of being “monster of the week”. Some were experimental prototypes, while others were adapted for specific operating environments. The High Mobility Zaku II was is a refined variant of the classic Zaku II that features improved thrust for space combat. Not many ofthese were built, and most of them were given to ace pilots for testing and feedback purposes.  They are highly coveted among Zeon’s ace pilots, as the possession of one of these babies is considered a status symbol.  This kit features the improved R-2 version that was customized for ace pilot Johnny Ridden. Only 4 of these R-2 Zaku IIs were ever built, and you are free to repaint this model in Robert Gillian or Gabby Hazzard custom colors (the 4th unit was used for testing and was never assigned to any combat pilots). 


This is 1 of the only 4 MSV models to be released in 1/60 scale, the same scale as the Perfect Grade (PG) Gundam kits. The completed model should stand around 12″ / 30cm tall. Since this kit was designed in the early 1980s, cement and painting is required. Parts are molded in Johnny Ridden’s custom colors (black and crimson). The major joints are articulated with an early version of polycap to prevent the joints from wearing out from repeated posing, and a decal sheet is included.


Other features of this kit include:


- Kit is designed to accommodate a battery powered LED (sold separately) to simulate the Zaku’s light-up monoeye. The monoeye unit rotates sideways inside the head via a notch hidden under the back of the head, and the battery casing is hidden inside the upper torso, which is accessible by removing the backpack


- Customizeed monoeye visor plate appears completely black but allows the light-up LED to shine through


- Polycaps for joints to keep them from wearing out due to repeated posing


- includes a figure of Zeon pilot


- include a Zaku machine gun


- Decals for the hard to paint details such as personalized insignia included with the kit


While the details and articulation of this old school model are nowhere close to the level of modern (late 1980s or newer) Gundam kits, you can’t beat the sheer presence of it when it is properly painted and completed. It is also great for parts to kitbash together a Perfect Grade MS-06R-2 High Mobility Zaku II, using parts from this kit and a PG Zaku II.


Kit is brand new unbuilt and most of the parts are still factory sealed in plastic bags.  2 of the parts runner comes from the factory not sealed in a plastic bag, as Bandai kits from the 70s and 80s were all packaged this way to reduce shipping weight and cost of materials.  This is a 1994 reissue, so the box and manual are still in fairly new condition. There is some storage and surface wear on the box, but it’s mostly in decent shape.  This kit hasn’t been reissued for a very long time, don’t miss your chance to add it to your collection! Item will be sent to you from a non-smoking residence, where it has remained since I bought it several years ago.
